How to Overcome Gym and Fitness Anxiety

I’ve seen firsthand the impact that gym anxiety can have on someone’s fitness journey. It’s completely normal to feel nervous about starting a new workout routine, especially if you’re new to the gym or have had a break from exercising. But it’s important to remember that everyone has to start somewhere and it’s okay to take things at your own pace.

According to a study published in the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, up to 85% of people experience some form of gym anxiety or fear of failure when starting a new fitness program (J Sport Exerc Psychol. 2003;25(1):63-72). This fear can be fueled by a variety of factors, including self-consciousness about one’s appearance or ability, concerns about being judged by others, and fear of injury or pain.

But the good news is that gym anxiety is completely manageable and can be overcome with the right mindset and strategies. Here are a few tips that I often share with my clients to help them overcome their gym anxiety
